Business Basics Program
A thriving enterprise requires more than technical skill; it requires a genuine understanding of how a business should be managed for it to succeed. The Business Basics Program at The Learning Centre for Skilled Trades equips students with the practical knowledge necessary to establish, manage, and grow their business, whether as an independent owner or in a managerial role within an existing organization.
Our curriculum addresses the core mechanics on which successful businesses depend, including bookkeeping, accounting, payroll processing, and the daily banking procedures that maintain financial stability. Students develop a working understanding of business operations, including staff scheduling, inventory management, and customer service, and they acquire the skills needed to market and advertise a business effectively in order to attract and retain a loyal clientele.
This program also examines the principles of retail commerce, including methods for selling products and building strong customer relationships. Students learn how to manage employees, including hiring, scheduling, and leadership, as well as the practical considerations involved in operating a physical location, such as negotiating a commercial lease and understanding the insurance coverage a business needs.
Beyond daily operations, students examine the local and global economic trends that can affect the business, the process for selecting and registering an appropriate business model, and, for those who intend to acquire an existing enterprise, the methods for evaluating and negotiating such a purchase. The curriculum also provides a foundational understanding of the information technology systems that a modern business relies on today.
Why It Matters
Skilled trades have long formed the foundation of local commerce; business knowledge is what allows that foundation to last. Many capable professionals possess exceptional technical skill yet lack the business acumen that sustainability requires, and this gap often explains the premature closure of otherwise promising enterprises. The Business Basics Program was created to address this gap, equipping students with the confidence and competence that lasting success demands.
